Go forth and multiply

Is it me, or is insert-a-multiplication-sign-for-a-product-tie-in a HK thing? 

I'm not sure why it irritates me. Possibly because it is frequently associated with Hello Kitty and the like. (Hello Kitty × Mickey. Hello Kitty × Little Red Riding Hood. Hello Kitty × ... a unicorn poo. Etc.) Or possibly because I am not sure how to say it. Hello Kitty multiplied by unicorn poo? Hello Kitty times unicorn poo? Hello Kitty by unicorn poo? None seem right.

Perhaps advertisers hope that '×'ing the two names will somehow come to a greater result than '+'ing them.

I can only assume that inserting the mathematical symbol is effective because I've seen it so many × over the past year. Clearly, marketers are all trying to get a piece of the π.
